NORTH STOKE

North Stoke is a delightful small Thames-side village on a sleepy backwater, but many people will perhaps know the village as the home of The Springs Hotel and Golf Club which is on the main Goring to Crowmarsh road.

The parish church is the Church of St. Mary, which is almost entirely medieval, and still has wall paintings, ancient oak pews and a brick floor.
For brief information about St. Mary's Church click here. The famous contralto Dame Clara Butt, who was a resident of the village until her death in 1936, is buried in St.Mary's Churchyard.

The nearby Springs Hotel was constructed in 1874 and is a fine example of a Victorian Tudor-style Country House with oak panelled reception halls and crackling log fires in open hearths.
The building was once the home of Ian Gillan, formerly of the rock group Deep Purple, and he had a guitar-shaped swimming pool built in the grounds.

Some scenes from an episode of the popular TV series Midsomer Murders have been filmed in the village of North Stoke.
